Lysander, New York- Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that a Baldwinsville

man is hospitalized after his vehicle leaves the road and strikes a tree. At approximately 2:15 am Thanksgiving morning, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area of Smokey Hollow Road near Kellogg Road to investigate a one-car accident. Deputies report that the occupant of the vehicle, John P. Sunderhaft, 36, of 22 Athena Drive, sustained critical injuries to his lower extremities after being pinned inside his vehicle. According to deputies, Sunderhaft was traveling south bound on Smokey Hollow Road prior to the accident and it is unclear at this time to why his vehicle left the roadway.

Due to the extensive damage to Sunderhaft’s vehicle and the injuries he sustained, rescue crews from the Baldwinsville and Phoenix Fire Department’s were called to the scene.

Surgeons from University Hospital were also called to the scene to assist with the removal of Sunderhaft. After several hours of extrication procedures, Sunderhaft was freed from the vehicle and was transported to University Hospital by Mercy Flight Helicopter.

The Investigation into the exact cause of the collision is being investigated by the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Team. Intoxication does not appear to be a factor and no tickets have been issued at this time.
