(Town of Pompey, NY – Sept. 8, 2010) Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a Chittenango man.

At approximately 3:45 p.m., Sheriff’s Deputies and rescue crews were called to the 4200 block of Pompey Center Road, between Indian Hill Road and Preserve Parkway to investigate a one car crash that claimed the life of Erich Sorrentino, 22, of 106 Ellen Dr., Chittenango.

A passing motorist, who did not witness the crash, discovered Sorrentino’s overturned vehicle and immediately called 911.

Deputies report that Sorrentino was operating a 2007 Toyota Corolla and traveling north on Pompey Center Road when he apparently lost control of his car. Sorrentino’s car crossed over the southbound lane, drove off the roadway, and went into a roll before striking a utility pole. Impact from the crash sheared the utility pole in half and caused heavy damage to Sorrentino’s car.

Rescue crews pronounced Sorrentino dead at the scene.

Sheriff’s Accident Investigators were called to the scene and will conduct a complete investigation. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Pompey Center Road between Indian Hill and Preserve Parkway will remain closed for approximately 3 to 4 hours while crews replace the utility pole and repair utility lines.

(Elbridge, NY – Sept. 1, 2010) The New York State Police in Elbridge arrested Michael P. Kelly, 20, of 202 W. Main St. in Elbridge for two counts of Burglary.

(Town of Dewitt, NY – Sept. 1, 2010) Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that an East Syracuse man has been charged after attempting to run over Sheriff’s Deputies and ramming several police cars with a dump truck.

Last evening at approximately 10:30 p.m., Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the Great Northern Mall to investigate an attempted larceny of a vending machine. Great Northern Mall Security reported that a suspect, later identified as Stanley Lostumbo, 37, of 4403 James St. was breaking into a vending machine outside of the mall. After being discovered by mall security, Lostumbo got into a 1999 Chevrolet dump truck and fled from the scene.

Within minutes Sheriff’s Deputies spotted the suspect vehicle traveling south on Route 481. Deputies activated their emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop, however Lostumbo failed to pull over and continued traveling south on Route 481.

With speed not exceeding 70 mph, Deputies continued following in attempt to pull him over.

Lostumbo continued traveling south and exited onto Kirkville Road making his way to the CSX Rail yards where he drove across the tracks and maneuvered his way around moving rail cars.

Deputies, continued following Lostumbo who led police throughout the Village of East Syracuse and City of Syracuse area. As Lostumbo continued eluding police, his actions became increasingly aggressive, erratic, and dangerous.

At approximately 11: 10 p.m., Lostumbo struck a utility pole on Hale Avenue at which point he began driving though backyards off of Shearin Avenue. Lostumbo drove behind the residence located at 107 Beard Ave. where deputies believed to have boxed him in.

Deputies Andrew Costello and Matthew Carey exited their patrol cars to approached Lostumbo’s vehicle as he attempted to drive through a hedgerow in order to continue traveling south towards James Street. As the deputies approached the rear driver’s side of the dump truck, Lostumbo shifted the 36,000 pound truck into reverse and sped backwards towards the deputies at which point Deputy Costello discharged his firearm. Lostumbo subsequently shifted the truck into drive and plowed through the brush making his way onto James Street where he continued to flee.

Lostumbo continued traveling west on James Street leading police onto Thompson Road making his way to Burnett Avenue between Thompson Road and Kane Street where he crashed into a City of Syracuse Police cruiser. As Deputies pulled in behind Lostumbo’s dump truck and exited their patrol cars to approach Lostumbo, he again shifted the truck into reverse ramming patrol cars and nearly running over deputies attempting to take him into custody. Deputies Matthew Carey and Matthew Carlson discharged their firearms and immediately place him into custody when the truck came to a stop.

Lostumbo sustained minor injuries as a result of bullet fragments and was treated and released from University Hospital.

His passenger Kyla K. Kazel, 20, unknown address, was also injured by a bullet fragment and was treated and released from Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital.

Sheriff’s Detectives and Sheriff’s Evidence Technicians spent the day interviewing a number of witnesses and processing evidence at three separate crime scenes (Great Northern Mall, 107 Beard Avenue and Burnett Avenue). And upon further investigation, Lostumbo was charged with two counts of second-degree attempted murder, one count of petit larceny, one count of second-degree criminal mischief, three counts of third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer, three counts of reckless driving and multiple vehicle and traffic violations.

Kazel was also charged with petit larceny and second-degree criminal mischief along with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance in connection with a prior investigation.

Although Lostumbo endangered several motorists and pedestrians throughout the duration of the incident, fortunately no one was injured as a result of his reckless actions.

Several agencies including the Dewitt, East Syracuse, Manlius, North Syracuse and Syracuse Police Departments assisted the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies Costello, Carey and Carlson escaped the incident without injury and were given administrative leave for the evening and will return to work on Sept. 2.

Kazel was issued appearance tickets for the petit larceny and criminal mischief charges to appear in the Town of Clay Court and was lodged at the Onondaga County Justice Center pending arraignment in City of Syracuse Court Sept. 2 for the drug related charges.

Lostumbo was to be arraigned in the Village of East Syracuse Court sometime before 6 p.m. Sept. 1.
