Syracuse University commissioned Jim Ridlon to create a piece paying tribute to 100 years of Syracuse football. The piece, shown here, is permanently displayed in the Ernie Davis Room in the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University

Artist/athlete achieved fame in both pursuits

(New Woodstock, NY) On Sept. 10, area residents will be able to take in a 45-year retrospective of this internationally acclaimed, Cazenovia-based artist’s work in a two-site exhibition in the hamlet of New Woodstock. Small landscape paintings will be on view in the New Woodstock Free Library’s gallery and Ridlon opens his studio on Railroad Street in New Woodstock for the viewing of large-scale paintings, portfolios of prints, assemblages, posters and other works completed over his long and storied career.

Ridlon is an artist comfortable in a variety of media and subject matter – from the Cazenovia landscape to the history of Syracuse football. In addition to his work for galleries, he has completed sports-related commissions for a several national corporations, including large assemblages for ABC Television to commemorate Monday Night Football and Wide World of Sports. He also fashioned the Outland Trophy, awarded each year to the premier college football lineman.

“I can’t wait for someone from Syracuse University to win the Outland,” he says. “It’s coming.”

The Monday Night Football assemblage now resides at the entrance of the new addition to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The Wide World of Sports piece, which commemorates the 25th anniversary of that seminal show, is comprised of 750 items donated by individuals who competed in events televised by the show. It is expected to be moved to the Smithsonian Institution in the near future.

In 1989, Syracuse University commissioned Ridlon to create a 6 foot by 20 foot assemblage reflecting on the first one hundred years of Syracuse Football.

“It was really wonderful to work on a narrative that I was a part of,” Ridlon states. “Did you know the first colors of Syracuse football were pink and powder blue,” he asks. “It didn’t take them long to change the color to orange!”

The “100 Years of Syracuse Football” assemblage is permanently installed in the Ernie Davis Room in the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University.

But sports aren’t the only source of Ridlon’s commission work. The Walt Disney Corporation commissioned the artist in 1989 to create a large-format assemblage commemorating the 35th anniversary of Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. The piece stood at the entrance to the theme park for a year and now graces the entrance to the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. Posters of the Disney commission will be included in Ridlon’s studio exhibition.

The reception for Ridlon on Sept. 10 will be held simultaneously at the New Woodstock Free Library on Route 13 and Ridlon’s studio on Railroad Street. The reception will feature works on display and for sale at both locations. The exhibit will open at both locations at 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served and artworks purchased through 9 p.m. Through Oct. 8, when the show ends, the collection at the library will be open for viewing during all regular library hours. Information about viewing the collection at Ridlon’s studio may be obtained by calling 662-3134.

(Skaneateles, NY) Imagine That…, the fine arts and fine craft gallery at 38 E. Genesee St., Skaneateles, will feature new figurative artwork by Joyce Bond Backus throughout September.

The show opens Sept. 3 from 6 to 9 p.m., as part of the village’s First Friday art night. The longtime Skaneateles-area artist—known for her nature, figurative and whimsical paintings—will be in attendance and available to discuss her work. Refreshments and musical entertainment will be provided.

“My recent figure-drawing series combines the tradition of life observation drawing and experimental digital techniques,” says Backus. “I combine multiple hand-drawn images with my digital imagery, handmade paper, hand-written letters and found artifacts. These pieces reflect urban settings, architectural and natural environments.

“Each image created from my life figure drawings becomes a unique work in a series of related themes,” she explains. “My digital techniques have become drawing tools as much as my paintbrush or charcoal stick. I work to create an emotional connection to the art image. I enjoy the psychological element that happens between artist, life model and drawing surface.”

Backus’ jewelry designs are also shown at Imagine That…

Backus works from her home studio in Marietta, where she says she is inspired by “our beautiful area landscapes and my English gardens.”

She earned master’s degrees in illustration and environmental design at Syracuse University and teaches fashion design at SU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Her art can be viewed at www.joycebackus.com.

Imagine That… is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

For more information, call the gallery at 685-6264.

(Skaneateles, NY) An exhibition by Phil Austin of Snake Oil Glassworks will run throughout August at Imagine That…, the fine arts and fine craft gallery at 38 E. Genesee St., Skaneateles. The show opens Aug. 6 from 6 to 9 p.m., during the village’s First Friday art night. Refreshments and musical entertainment will be provided.

Austin is known throughout the region for his handcrafted glass bowls, vases and pumpkins. Most of his works are done in the traditional way—freehand, without a mold. All are created at his hot glass studio on Jordan Road in Skaneateles.

The studio, built in 2004, houses a hot shop (where the furnace is located), a coldworking shop, and a retail store and gallery.

Austin, who designed and built all of the studio’s furnaces and ovens, characterizes his role there as head glassblower, equipment builder, maintenance supervisor and janitor, while his wife, Peg, oversees public relations, managing the store, and Austin’s show schedule.

“People are fascinated by the process of glassblowing, so we have open houses and do demos at the studio twice a year,” he says.

The process is a painstaking one.

Bowls, for example, take him two hours to create—one hour in preparation and one hour on the blowpipe. “It’s like working with 2,000-degree Play-Doh,” he says of the work, which he describes as performance art.

“It’s one-time through from start to finish. You don’t get to backtrack and fix things.”

Austin, who earned a master of fine arts degree in the glass program at the School for American Crafts at Rochester Institute of Technology, also teaches design and drawing at Onondaga Community College.

Imagine That… is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

(Skaneateles, NY) Tim Green, attorney, author, commentator and former NFL football player, and Julie Abbott, former co-host of “Bridge Street” and local news anchor, will emcee the Skaneateles Arts Council’s sixth annual summer gala, “A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream,” July 25. The event, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Stella Maris Retreat and Renewal Center, features lakeside cocktails; a gourmet, French bistro-style dinner prepared by Chris Kuhns, executive chef of Phoebe’s Restaurant and the Sherwood Inn; and a concert by Grammy-nominated jazz guitarist/singer John Pizzarelli.

The Emcees

Tim Green is the New York Times best-selling author of 14 suspense novels and a practicing attorney with Hiscock & Barclay. Called the “Renaissance Man” of sports by both Sports Illustrated and the Los Angeles Times, he was a star defensive end with the Atlanta Falcons for eight years, following his first-round selection in 1986, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Green, co-valedictorian of his undergraduate class and an honors law school graduate of Syracuse University, has used his education and his athletic experiences to become an increasingly popular television celebrity. After 11 years as an NFL analyst for Fox Sports and National Public Radio, he hosted Fox’s nationally syndicated news magazine, “A Current Affair.” More recently, he hosted the ABC reality show “Find My Family.”

Green’s newest bestseller, “False Convictions,” was released this past February. His other works include “The Dark Side of the Game,” a nonfiction New York Times bestseller featured on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” and “A Man and His Mother: An Adopted Son’s Search,” a memoir featured in People magazine and on “Entertainment Tonight” and ABC’s “Primetime.” In addition, he has two series of young reader novels set in the sports of football and baseball, all of which have been on the New York Times bestseller list.

Green lives with his wife, Illyssa, and their five children on Skaneateles Lake.

Julie Abbott—reporter, anchor and journalist—was co-host of WSYR NewsChannel 9’s midday show, “Bridge Street With Rick & Julie.” Abbott moved to “Bridge Street” from the anchor position at NewsChannel 9’s “Eleven at 11.” She joined Rick Gary as a guest host on Y94 FM, and frequently filled in with him on NewsChannel 9’s “Daybreak.” Abbott serves on the Arts Council’s advisory board and has appeared in commercials. She lives in Skaneateles, with her husband, Steve, and their four children.

Pizzarelli, who has recorded more than 20 albums since his first release in 1990, started playing the guitar at the age of 6, following in the tradition of his father, guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli. He often plays with his father and his wife, singer/actress Jessica Molaskey, in the John Pizzarelli Trio, a group that has been called “the First Family of Cool” by the San Francisco Chronicle and “the von Trapps on Martinis” by The New Yorker.

(Skaneateles, NY) Imagine That…, the fine arts and fine craft gallery at 38 E. Genesee St., Skaneateles, will showcase the work of Tully artist Thaddeus Chapman throughout the month of July. The show opens July 2 from 6 to 9 p.m., during the village’s First Friday art night. Refreshments and musical entertainment will be provided.

Although Chapman considers himself a portrait painter, many of the works he will be exhibiting feature scenes of Skaneateles, including the Judge Ben Wiles, a view of the village from the pier, Skaneateles Lake as seen from East Lake Road, and Fennell Street on Memorial Day.

Chapman’s paintings are created using gouache on paper—a process that involves applying layers of water-based paint to a very thin rice paper, which then absorbs the paint and becomes a part of the artwork.

“I use a lot of water and color to build up the dimension of a painting,” says Chapman, who describes his style as impressionistic.

Before Chapman starts to paint, he takes reference photographs of his subject and develops drawings from them. He has completed custom pieces ranging from portraits of pets to pictures of houses, families and celebrities, including Elizabeth Taylor, Charlie Chaplin and Alfred Hitchcock.

An illustration of his appeared in the March/April 2008 issue of Making Music magazine. His works also have been on view at Armory Square’s Freedom of Espresso coffee shop and at the Sugarpearl coffee shop on Burnet Avenue.

Chapman is a 2004 graduate of Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. This is his first gallery show.

Imagine That… opened last July, and in March the gallery welcomed Imagine to their new combined location. “The combination of gallery and jewelry store has been a great success thus far, and sharing the family business is a joy,” says Imagine That…. owner Sarah Panzarella.

Her father, Joe Panzarella, owner of Imagine, is equally pleased with the metamorphosis of Imagine and Imagine That… into a single entity. “We had no idea they would work so well together,” he says. “When we put them together, we got the ‘wow’ factor.

“Our customers love the space, the view, the feel. They come not only to purchase art, but also to appreciate the wide variety of works and talent on display. They enjoy the entire atmosphere,” Joe Panzarella said.

“At Imagine, we had always talked about having gallery shows, but we never had the room to stage them,“ he says. “This location gives us that space, and has allowed us to expand into fine art, ceramics, fiber, and additional glass and woodworking. In addition, customers now benefit from the aesthetic tastes of two buyers, instead of just one.”

Imagine That… is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

For more information, call the gallery at 685-6264.

Adirondack Memories – “Where Mountains and Memories Meet”

Photography by Debra Parry Trichilo

Debra Trichilo sees photograph opportunities everywhere she goes. This month, she will be showcasing her photographs of the Adirondacks.

Artist’s Statement:

I see photographs everywhere I go. Not in the typical sense, but in my head. Driving down the road I will yell for my husband to stop the car because something has caught my eye and I can see the photograph I want to produce in my head. Those missed opportunities may never be repeated. My husband is also a photography enthusiast, so he understands my passion completely.

I have no formal training in photography. I am presently enrolled in the New York Institute of Photography taking a basic digital photography course just to understand the features of my camera. I have picked up most of what I know by reading books and magazines. The best invention in my opinion is digital photography. To be able to take hundreds of thousands of photographs without investing any more money than it takes to purchase a camera and SD card and a computer gives me the freedom to experiment. It gives me creative license to photograph each scene in as many different ways as I see it in my head. To do what I do and have the expense of film and processing would be impossible.

I tend to photograph nature more than other subjects. I am not limited to any particular subject. The world is open to my lens. Many who have seen my photographs think they have been PhotoShopped but I don’t know anything about using PhotoShop. What you see before you is what I see through my camera lens. I may crop it a little or adjust the lighting a bit, but otherwise the photograph you see is the one I saw when I knew I had to capture this scene for others to enjoy.

When not taking photographs, I work as an administrative assistant and paralegal in a busy downtown Syracuse law office. I graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in 2003. I have three children, a step daughter and two beautiful grandchildren who keep me busy. My family is very important to me.

My husband also enjoys photography and when we aren’t out snapping pictures, we may be found in our yard doing gardening or camping, kayaking and hiking.

Mundy Branch Library

1204 S. Geddes Street

435-3797

……………………………

“Short Stories”

Art Exhibit by Amy E. Bartell

Artist Amy E. Bartell will exhibit her mixed media paintings.

Paine Branch Library

Photographs of the Mexican Riviera

By Luann Sims

(reshowing from May)

Ms. Sims is a Paine Branch Library staff person and traveler who grew up and lives in Eastwood. She has worked for OCPL since 1980. She has traveled extensively including Alaska, Hawaii, Fatima, Portugal and most recently to the Mexican Riviera. She finds photography is a healing experience and serves as a great creative outlet. She dedicates her work to her mother, Barbara A. Sims, and her family.

Petit Branch Library

105 Victoria Place

435-3636

……………………………

Photography by

Jacques Lewalle

This month Petit will be showing the photographs of Jacques Lewalle, a professor at Syracuse University and a violinist. His photography captures the effects of light on objects, architecture, and nature. Don’t miss his visions of color, shadows, and reflections in this exhibit.

Soule Branch Library

101 Springfield Road

435-5320

……………………………

Art Exhibit by

Nives Marzocchi

Once again, Nives Marzocchi delights us with her creativity and talented art work. She will be showcasing some of her abstract ceramics, paintings in acrylics, watercolors, and pastels, many of which are seascapes, city and countryscapes. Nives also will be exhibiting mixed medium including metals, materials and stone on wood and iron. There may be some surprises that she brings along that are always interesting and new to her repertoire. Nives is originally from Italy. In 1959, she and her husband immigrated to Upstate New York where they raised their three children.

White Branch Library

World Refugee Art Exhibit

The United Nations Refugee Agency has set aside June 20 each year to commemorate the heroic endurance of refugees who have been victimized by violence around the world. In honor of the many people in CNY who’ve fled their countries and started a new life in this community, the library will showcase art generated by local immigrants & refugees. Come to the library and see the creative expressions created by these expatriates.

Art exhibits are displayed during regular library hours. All exhibits are FREE and open to the public.

(Fabius, NY) The Gandee Gallery is proud to present the work of ceramist, John Jessiman, and painter, Steven Barbash. These two distinguished former professors of art taught together for almost 30 years at State University of New York, Cortland. The public is invited to hear the artists speak about their artwork and long friendship at the Gandee Gallery Saturday, June 5th, from 5-6 PM with a reception to follow, from 6-8 PM.

John Jessiman’s ceramic artwork is rooted in function and inspired by
the abstract expressionist aesthetic. He received his MFA in Ceramics
from Alfred University in 1963 at a time when artists where pushing the
boundaries of their medium and he was drawn to ceramic artwork that
“moved clay much as the expressionist painter approached painting.”
This connection continues to inform his art practice. His work in the
upcoming Gandee Gallery show will demonstrate his visceral forms
and atmospheric surfaces.

After retiring from SUNY Cortland in 1996 after 33 years of teaching,
Jessiman moved to Appomattox, VA and founded the Cub Creek Foundation in 2001, a residency program for emerging ceramic artists. He actively exhibits his artwork and conducts workshops at many venues nationwide.

Steven Barbash is a master draftsman. His work investigates the natural world with attentiveness and formal precision.

A graduate of Yale (where he studied under Bauhaus proponent, Josef Albers), he applies abstract construction and structure to “the compelling images of life.” His proficiency with painting, printmaking, and drawing can be seen at the Gandee Gallery, offering the viewer a sampling of his techniques and subject matter, including studies of landscapes, flowers,
birds, and the human figure.

Barbash’s teaching career began in 1960 at Juniata College, in Huntingdon, PA. In 1970, he moved to Upstate New York to teach at State University of New York, Cortland, and nearly 30 years later, he retired in 1999 as a University Distinguished Professor. He has shown his work regionally and nationally, and has work in many permanent collections, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, and the National Collection of Fine Arts at the Smithsonian Institute.

He lives with his wife, Judy, in Ludlowville, NY.

(Fabius, NY) Shanna Fliegelʼs ceramic artwork draws upon “the surrealistic nature of dreams and childhood memories” and combines image, color, and sculpted forms to create “vehicles that generate stories for the viewer.”

Her artistic output includes anthropomorphic figures, wall tablets, and functional vessels and these will be on view in Fliegelʼs upcoming show, Fiction to Function, at the Gandee Gallery from May 1 through 31. A reception will be held May 1 from 6 to 9 p.m.

A reoccurring theme in Fliegelʼs work is “the disposition of contemporary societyʼs relationship and/or disconnect with both wild and domesticated animals.” She states, “by chronicling the threatened and easily forgotten creatures that make up the natural world through drawn and figurative forms I hope to preserve their fragile essence as permanent artifacts.”

The Gandee Gallery is also sponsoring a hands-on workshop conducted by Fliegel. It will be held Sat., May 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Gandee Gallery studio and is open to all experience levels. The cost is $35.

For more information or to register, email Jen Gandee at jen@gandeegallery.com.

The Gandee Gallery, located on Route 80 in the Village of Fabius. It is open Thursday – Saturday 11-6, Sunday 11-4 or by appointment or chance.
